About Retrogression

Retrogression is an astronomical phenomenon that also has profound astrological implications. Without going to complex technical details, retrogression happens when a planet moves farthest away from the Sun in its orbit. This state is opposite to combustion when a planet is nearest to the Sun. Note – only the inner planets, Mercury and Venus are capable of being both retrograde and combust simultaneously.

Now, several key classical astrology texts state that:

1. A retrograde planet becomes more powerful (Brihat Parashar Hora Shastra)
2. A retrograde planet gives opposite results, i.e., an exalted planet behaves likes a debilitated one and if placed in an enemy sign behaves as if it is in a friendly sign (Uttar Kalamrit)
3. A retrograde planet gives results of its Primary Signification House (Karak Bhav) (Sanketnidhi)

Thus, as per the classics, it is evident that a transiting retrograde planet gives results that are ‘deviant’ from those of its direct motion. Further, it is also believed that a malefic planet gives bad results during retrogression and retrogression of any planet in its own sign is even more damaging. Finally, transit of malefic planets through the cardinal signs is also considered inauspicious for mundane affairs.

From the above we can conclude that analysis of retrogression in transit cannot be conducted via the conventional techniques and needs special treatment.

Saturn in Retrogression

During 2021, Saturn turns retrograde on May 23^rd and stays in that motion till October 23^rd. Being a major planet with significant implications both at an individual and mundane level, it thus becomes important to understand impact of this retrograde transit of Saturn during this period.

At present, Saturn is transiting through its own sign of Capricorn. Since a retrograde planet gives results that are opposite from its normal trajectory, it can be said that if Saturn was delivering positive results during its regular motion, the same results would be reversed during retrogression. Contrary to this, if Saturn was delivering negative results during its normal motion, results would turn benevolent when Saturn turns retrograde. Along with this, Saturn would also influence the 10^th house (Karak Bhav) from where it is placed in the horoscope, and cause affliction to the house where its aspect falls.

Before proceeding to individual results, it is important to note that the result of any transit on the horoscope are modified by several other factors such as planetary placements, prevalent Dasha as well as transits of other planets. In addition, any retrograde planet in the horoscope also gets triggered or activated when the same planet turns retrograde in transit motion.

Individual Results

From the above it can be derived that Saturn turning retrograde in Capricorn is not very positive for Taurus, Gemini, Leo and Capricorn. And since Saturn’s retrograde aspect falls on Cancer, Libra and Pisces, these signs too are expected to suffer – both at a mental and physical level.

Let us now see the results of retrograde Saturn on various signs:

1. Aries: Obstacles in work, possibilities on long journey, unfavorable for parents, financial gains
2. Taurus: Challenges to health, obstacles in journeys, receipt of bad news
3. Gemini: Ill Health, discordance with spouse, change in business, financial progress
4. Cancer: Financial progress, closure of unfinished work, troubles from family members
5. Leo: Problems to children, tensions  in romance, financial crunch, avoid speculations/ gambling
6. Virgo: Possibility of relocation, troubles to mother, lack of domestic happiness, work hard on education
7. Libra: Overall good time, productive journeys, gains from property, good period for students
8. Scorpio: Problems from family, avoid giving loans, unproductive efforts, unnecessary travel, untimely food
9. Sagittarius: Health issues, possible relocation, new ventures, workplace stress and tension, change of subordinates/colleagues
10. Capricorn: Increased expenses, problems to father, trouble with outsiders, improved work conditions
11. Aquarius: Financial gains, support from friends, completion of unfinished work, good time for initiating new ventures
12. Pisces: Financial gains, change of work, improved work conditions, trouble from colleagues

National and Global Implications: Mundane Astrology

Along with individual results, transit of major planets like Jupiter, Rahu/Ketu and Saturn also influence national and global events. Saturn in particular represents the masses, working class, heavy industries, petroleum, coal, leather, traditional beliefs, antiques etc. When retrograde in its own sign, Saturn would impact these significations adversely. There would be discontent and problems among the masses and working class apart from slowdown of industrial activity. This would also be accompanied by increased laziness, arrogance, diseases and grief during the period retrogression.

As mentioned previously, transit of other planets would also increase and/or decrease the effect of Saturn’s retrogression. In this context, the transit of Mars to its debilitation sign of Cancer between 2^nd June and 20^th July holds special importance, as it will oppose the retrograde Saturn in Capricorn. This novel planetary alignment of two strong malefic planets opposing each other is not auspicious at all.

There are possibilities of natural calamities including earthquake, excessive rain and drought apart from rail and/air accidents. Saturn also expresses fiery performance against the ruling party of Mars. It is also pertinent to mention here that Mars is both the king and minister of this year for India’s independence chart and Mars would be particularly hostile in debilitation and also under the seventh aspect of Saturn.

All in all, extreme caution with regards to mundane events is advised during the retrogression period between 23rd May and 11 October 2021, and more so between 2^nd June and 20^th July.

इस वर्ष शनि 23 मई से 11अक्टूबर तक वक्र अवस्था में रहेंगे। वक्र गति में ग्रहों का प्रभाव सामान्य से अलग तरह का होता है। शास्त्रों में कहा गया है कि –

(1) वक्री अवस्था में ग्रह बलवान होते हैं।  (पाराशर)

(2) वक्री अवस्था में ग्रह विपरीत परिणाम देते हैं अर्थात उच्च अवस्था में नीच का शत्रु के घर में मित्र राशि का प्रभाव। (उत्तर कला मृत)

इतना तो स्पष्ट है कि वक्री अवस्था में ग्रहों के प्रभाव सामान्य से हट कर होता है ,क्योंकि ग्रहों की चाल सामान्य नहीं होती है। वक्री अवस्था में शनि का प्रभाव क्या होगा – का विश्लेषण करना महत्वपूर्ण होगा।  वर्तमान में शनि अपनी स्वराशि मकर से गुज़र रहा है। वक्री अवस्था में शनि का फल सामान्य से हट कर होगा, यदि शनि मार्गी अवस्था में अच्छा परिणाम दे रहा है या व्यक्तिगत कुंडली में कार्यकारी शुभ प्रभाव दे रहा है तो शनि का प्रभाव वक्री अवस्था में बदल जायेगा। अर्थात अब शनि विपरीत प्रभाव देगा। इसके विपरीत यदि शनि विपरीत बुरा प्रभाव दे रहा है तो आगे शुभ प्रभाव होंगे। इसके साथ ही वक्री अवस्था में शनि का फल कुंडली में जहां बैठा है उस भाव से कारक स्थान (दशम)भाव को ज़्यादा प्रभावित करेगा ।

शनि के संदर्भ में एक लोकोक्ति प्रसिद्ध है कि शनि की वक्र दृष्टि प्रतिकूल होती है। इस कारण शनि की वक्र दृष्टि जिस भाव पर भी पड़े, उसके परिणाम में प्रतिकूलता आएगी।

उपर्युक्त तथ्यों के आधार पर यह कहा जा सकता है कि वक्री शनि का प्रभाव वृष, मिथुन, सिंह, मकर के लिए विशेष अनुकूल नहीं है। चूँकि शनि की वक्र दृष्टि कर्क, तुला और मीन राशि पर पड़ेगी, इस कारण इन राशियों के परिणाम भी अनुकूल नहीं होंगे। शनि चूँकि पापी ग्रह है, इस कारण इसका प्रभाव शारीरिक कष्ट और मानसिक संताप अधिक देता है। यहाँ पर यह ध्यान देने की बात है कि गोचर में ग्रहों का परिणाम अस्थायी होते हैं और यह प्रभाव कुंडली में ग्रहों की अवस्था, चलने वाली महादशा पर निर्भर करती है एवं अन्य ग्रहों के संचरण पर भी निर्भर करती है।

यहाँ पर सभी राशियों पर वक्री शनि के प्रभाव का संक्षिप्त फल दिया जा रहा है –

4. कर्क राशि -आर्थिक प्रगति, रुके कार्य का संपादन, परंतु कुटुंब पक्ष से परेशानी 

5. सिंह राशि – संतान को कष्ट, रोमांस में बाधा, आर्थिक तंगी, सट्टेबाजी से बचें  

6. कन्या राशि – स्थान परिवर्तन संभव, पारिवारिक कष्ट, माता को परेशानी, शिक्षा में विशेष परिश्रम करें

7. तुला राशि – अनुकूल समय, यात्रा योग, सम्पति के कार्य में सफलता, विद्यार्थियों के लिए अनुकूल 

8. वृश्चिक राशि – कुटुंब से परेशानी, अनावश्यक यात्रा, असमय भोजन, कर्ज़ न दें, व्यर्थ की भाग-दौड़ 

9. धनु राशि – स्वास्थ्य बाधा, स्थान परिवर्तन, नए कार्य का योग, कार्य स्थान पर तनाव

ग्रहों के संचरण व्यक्ति के साथ साथ राष्ट्रीय और अंतरराष्ट्रीय घटनाओं को भी प्रभावित करता है। शनि और बृहस्पति – ये दो प्रमुख ग्रह हैं जिनके आधार पर मेदिनी ज्योतिष के फलादेश होते हैं। शनि की वक्री अवस्था राष्ट्रीय और अंतरराष्ट्रीय घटनाओं के लिए भी महत्वपूर्ण है। शनि प्रजा, मज़दूर वर्ग भारी उद्योग, पैट्रोलियम पदार्थ, कोयला, लोहा, चमड़ा, पुरातन मान्यता आदि का कारक ग्रह है। स्वराशि में वक्री होने पर शनि का प्रभाव इन चीज़ों के संदर्भ में परिणाम प्रतिकूल होंगे। प्रजा में असंतोष बढ़ेगा मज़दूर वर्ग को विशेष समस्या से जूझना होगा। उद्योग धंधों में कमी आयेगी। लोगों में आलस्य और प्रमाद बढ़ेगा तथा रोग एवं शोक से परेशानी होगी। यह परिणाम शनि की वक्री अवस्था तक रहेगी अर्थात 11 अक्तूबर तक।

11 अक्तूबर के पहले अन्य ग्रहों के परिणाम शनि के प्रभाव को बढ़ाते-घटाते भी रहेंगे। इस संदर्भ में मंगल का संचरण कर्क राशि में काफी महत्वपूर्ण है जो कि 3 जून से होगा। मंगल का कर्क संचरण ( 3 जून से 20 जुलाई तक) मंगल और शनि की प्रतियुति होगी यह प्रतियुति कहीं से भी शुभ नहीं है। प्राकृतिक आपदा, जैसे- भूकंप, अतिवृष्टि, अनावृष्टि, रेल, हवाई दुर्घटना की संभावना बनी रहेगी। शनि मंगल की प्रतियुति सत्तापक्ष के विरुद्ध उग्र प्रदर्शन को भी व्यक्त करता है। यहां यह भी बताना उचित है कि मंगल इस वर्ष का राजा और मंत्री दोनों है।  उसका नीच राशि में होना और शनि के प्रतियुति में होना विशेष प्रतिकूल है।
